Fly Me to the Moon
Wins
- A section felt solid in C; could play at ~100 bpm with both root-position chords and closest voice-leading inversions
- Tried adding Charleston rhythm after pads
Still working on
- When rhythm is altered (Charleston), I tend to slip up in random places
- Some closest inversions didn't fit the sound; chose alternate shapes (notably vii°7 → III7)
Pre-practice ritual (10 sec): hear the first bar groove (pads → Charleston) before touching keys.
What I did
- ~20 minutes total.
- Focused on the A section of Fly Me to the Moon in C.
- First played chords as pads, then tried a bit of Charleston.
- Practiced both root chords and closest chord inversions (voice-leading), but occasionally chose different variations when the closest inversion didn’t fit the sound.
Notes / discoveries
- Overall it went good.
- Charleston + chord changes is where things break: when the rhythm changes, I can lose my place / make mistakes in unexpected spots.
- One major spot for choosing a different voicing: vii°7 → III7.
Next time
- Loop the bar(s) around the trouble spot (vii°7 → III7) and apply the Transition Loop Protocol: pads → Charleston → pads.
- On Charleston: repeat the same voicing on the off-beat hit; save voicing changes for downbeats.
