Week 1 Day 5 Song Application

Week 1, Day 5: Song Application (Track)

Constraint for today: Use only TWO voicing “families” for the A section and do not change them mid-chorus.

Practical tip: When you go to a track, simplify your left hand (roots or shells only). If the groove wobbles, drop RH color notes first — keep time at all costs.

Today is a “make it music” day: take what you did yesterday (pads → Charleston at ~100 bpm + voicing exploration) and turn it into a no-stop A-section performance with a backing track.

Key focus

  • Main: C major
  • Stretch (optional, short): F major (key ladder priority)

60 min

Warm-up (8–10 min)

  • 2 min: metronome on 2 & 4 — clap Charleston → one-chord Charleston.
  • 6–8 min: Transition Loop Protocol on one “break point” (choose one):
    • A7/C# or vii°7 → III7.
    • Rhythm ladder: 4 reps pads → 4 reps Charleston → 2 reps pads.
    • Rule: only speed up after 10 perfect reps.

Core (25–30 min)

  • 10 min: A section comp as pads, both hands.
    • Goal: 3 clean no-stop takes.
  • 10 min: A section comp as Charleston.
    • Start at a tempo you can win (even 80–90 bpm).
    • Rule: on the off-beat hit, repeat the same voicing (no switching on the “and”).
  • 5–10 min: Voicing lock-in
    • Pick 2 transitions that you liked yesterday.
    • Choose 2 favorite voicings per transition and repeat each move 5 times without changing the shapes.

Musical application (15 min)

  • Put on a backing track/iReal and do:
    • 2 choruses comp only (A section focus; if full form is too much, loop A)
    • 1 chorus “performance take”: no stopping, keep the constraint (two voicing families)

Record (3–5 min)

  • Record 30–60 seconds of your best no-stop A section with the track.

20 min

  • 3 min: metronome on 2 & 4 — clap → one-chord Charleston → micro-loop (A7/C# or vii°7→III7).
  • 7 min: A section comp, pads, 2 clean takes.
  • 7 min: A section comp, Charleston, easy tempo → push toward 100 bpm if clean.
  • 3 min: track: one no-stop A section (constraint on: two voicing families).

5 min

  • 60 sec: sing a 2-bar motif, then find it on the keys.
  • 3 min: A section loop — LH roots or shells, RH comp very lightly (pads only).
  • 60 sec: record 15–30s no-stop.

Notes / targets

  • Your win condition today is time + continuity (no-stop), not fancy harmony.
  • If you want one stretch: do a single A-section pass in F as pads only.
